A temple dog we named Be came into our lives when she contracted a blood parasite leaving her with 2 paralysed back legs.

Luckily we had enough volunteers to be able to give her regular therapy throughout the day and then she stayed with me, Gill, at night. This enabled her to receive more security and treatment at night too.

She was very fearful when she arrived and was crying the first night until I moved her to sleep next to me and she calmed down.

The therapy was coupled with medication and she made progress and how! We were so delighted when she could first stand with our help, then unaided and then her first tottering steps. From there it was a short time before she could walk more confidently and then she could get herself up from squatting to standing and walking ( and wagging her little tail).

Next step was introducing her to the other dogs and then when Ryan felt she was strong enough, we took her home to her temple where she was greeted enthusiastically by dogs and monks alike.

Great teamwork from Caruna, the vet, Ryan and his volis

We visited her since and each time been greeted by her trotting over to us, wagging her tail.

Heartwarming.

Rarely does it happen, that Ryan has a day off the Mission. When he does, the injured dogs find him. In November 2019 he visited Lod Cave and that’s where Pumpkin approached him. Severely injured with a gaping wound behind his ear he was a lucky guy to run into the right person. He joined the Pete’s Mission crew to receive medical treatment immediately.

Within the following weeks his wound recovered and by now you can barely see there ever was a problem. He is such a gentle and content old man, always down for a good brush and cuddle. We love Pumpkin dearly and for now he is enjoying his well-deserved Pension at Pete’s Mission.

Chok has lived a prisoned life, being tethered and neglected for years.
He was skinny and underfed before joining Pete’s Mission.
Ryan visited and treated him on a regular basis until one beautiful morning
in January 2019 he rescued Chok and walked all the way from town to the
Pete’s Mission property with him, which took about 2 hours.

Ever since Chok gained weight and self-confidence and loves his wide
private field and the freedom that comes with it.
Every afternoon he’s joined by a white cattle egret as they formed
a special friendship over time. His rescue was a proud and uplifting moment
for Ryan and the whole Pete’s Mission team.
